Interview with H.E. Mr. Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Prime Minister, on APEC Viet Nam 2017
At the 24th APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Peru, member economies expressed strong support for the proposals presented by President Tran Dai Quang regarding the hosting of APEC 2017 in Viet Nam. Would you please kindly share some of the expectations of member economies during Viet Nam’s host year?
H.E. Pham Binh Minh: Hosting APEC 2017 is a priority of Viet Nam’s foreign policy and its efforts in international integration. As the incoming Host, our participation in the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Peru this year was very special. Viet Nam was seen not only as a member economy, but also someone who would steer the work of the Forum over the next year. Throughout the week, at meetings as well as bilateral encounters, we could see the interest in and support for Viet Nam’s hosting of APEC 2017. Member economies and the business community had high hopes and expectations for APEC 2017.
There was broad agreement with Viet Nam’s proposal of “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future” as the overarching theme, as well as and the tentative schedule of meetings and activities throughout the year. Member economies expressed their expectation that APEC 2017 would create new drivers for APEC to regain its economic and trade growth, and to further expand its cooperation to new sectors and deepen regional connectivity, helping meet the development needs of all member economies.
Equally important, given the new, evolving regional architectures, APEC is expected to enhance its role in contributing to "fostering a shared future", which envisions the Asia-Pacific as a community of peace, stability, development and prosperity.
We were also pleased to see member economies’ wish to expand their partnerships with Viet Nam. Their confidence in Viet Nam result from our achievements in the 30 years of Doi moi renovations, as well as our positive contributions to APEC over the years. Friends respect Viet Nam as an independent and self-reliant partner, and still recall the success of APEC Viet Nam 2006 with much appreciation.
In light of profound global changes and increasingly extensive intra-APEC and regional linkages, APEC 2017 should reflect Viet Nam's strategic vision for the Asia-Pacific region. It will be incumbent upon our Ministries and agencies to take a more proactive approach and make concrete and substantive proposals and ideas. The Vietnamese business community, academia and the public will also be active participants in our preparations and hosting of APEC activities. This will effectively help project Viet Nam’s image as a friendly, vibrant and dynamic country actively engaging the world.
