APEC Dialogue with Businesses on 8 December 2016
In the evening of 8 December 2016, immediately following the Symposium on priorities for APEC 2017, the APEC Dialogue with businesses was held under the theme of “Creating New Dynamism to Promote Growth and Integration”.
This is the first APEC Dialogue between Senior Officials and businesses to exchange views on expectations for APEC 2017.
Some 400 delegates, including about 100 representatives of chambers of commerce, trade associations and leading regional and Vietnamese enterprises took part in the dialogue.
Speakers at the Dialogue were Incoming APEC 2017 SOM Chair Bui Thanh Son and Chairman of Ha Noi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung. They were joined by Ambassador Luis Quesada, APEC Peru 2016 SOM Chair; Dr. Maurice Obstfeld, IMF Economic Counsellor; Dr. Alan Bollard, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat; Dr. Antonio Basilio, Director of the APEC Business Advisory Council’s International Secretariat, and Mr. Hoang Van Dung, ABAC Viet Nam Chair.
At the Dialogue, Mr. Bui Thanh Son said by organizing this event, Viet Nam wishes to foster closer connectivity between member economies with the regional business community, and “highlight the role of the APEC business community – a key element in creating new dynamism for growth, cooperation and connectivity in the Asia – Pacific.”
Stressing the “indispensable role” of the business community, the incoming APEC 2017 SOM Chair pointed out that “it is their participation that has contributed to the dynamism of this Forum, branding APEC as the premier cooperation mechanism for connectivity, trade and investment liberalization.”
The support of APEC business community has been “a source of encouragement to Viet Nam to continue moving forward to pursue uniform and comprehensive reforms, strengthening restructuring efforts, transforming the growth model and undertake comprehensive international integration,” he added.
Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung highlighted the importance of “APEC investment projects not only in promoting economic development and contributing to the City’s exports and revenues, but also in creating jobs, providing high-quality products, services to improve the living standard of Hanoians and accentuating new developments in the city’s modern facade.”
He detailed Ha Noi’s efforts in creating a favorable environment for business cooperation for mutual development, particularly the city’s efforts for sustainable and green growth. He expressed his hope that more APEC partners will consider the city a trustworthy destination for cooperation and investment.
Business representatives expressed their hope and expectation that the APEC Year in Viet Nam will deliver meaningful outcomes to contribute advancing APEC’s cooperation in 2017. Later in the evening, Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung hosted a Welcoming Dinner in honour of Dialogue participants.
